Phenomenal Debris showcases over a decade of Matt Wedel's monumental ceramics and drawings, marking his first large-scale solo exhibition in a major art museum. Renowned for pushing the boundaries of clay, Wedel creates works that evoke both familiar forms and his boundless imagination. His practice, rooted in experimentation, explores the interplay of possibility, creation, and destruction, resulting in what he calls “the phenomenal debris that is shed from being human.”
The exhibition design, created by SORT Studio, draws inspiration from the natural and man-made landscapes surrounding Wedel’s Ohio studio. Bold sculptural graphics and a printed Field Guide enhance the visitor experience by encouraging exploration and discovery, unburdened by an excess of in-gallery texts. Together, the design fosters an environment for wandering and contemplation, mirroring the dynamic interplay of nature, studio, and Wedel’s artistic process.
